Virtual private networking essentially is dynamic networking. A VPN is not dependant on any physical topology, since the circuit is established, maintained and torn down as required.
Four protocols that may be used in VPN's are:
- PPTP (Point to point tunneling protocol)
- L2F (Layer 2 forwarding protocol)
- IPSec (IP Security – Two modes are Tunnel and Transport mode)
- L2TP (Layer 2 Tunneling protocol)
A few of the highlights of these protocols are as follows:
PPTP
- PPTP is Microsoft®.
- PPTP is built on PPP architecture, and uses PPP for authentication.
- PPTP is a layer 2 protocol.
L2F
- L2F is a Cisco proprietary layer 2 tunneling protocol.
- L2F utlizes the services of PPP for authentication.
- L2F supports TACACS+ and RADIUS for authentication.
