The
Start-up and information gathering phase conducts a search is made for previous versions of Windows, and ‘mounted’ drives. A determination is made whether this will be an upgrade or a new install.
The Hardware detection phase for PnP devices and the resources are matched to available IRQs, and DMAs. If legacy devices are found the device I/O and memory addresses are compared to the DMI (Desktop Management Interface) database configurations.
- (A question mark in device manager indicates that Windows was unable to detect a specific driver for the device in its PnP database.)
The
Copy and expand files phase uses the Extract.exe command to extract files that will be required for the devices that were found in the detection phase. These extracted files will be located in the Destination directory.
This is the point when the installer is offered the option to create a start up disk. (EBD –Emergency boot disk)
Final configuration phase leads to the first restart.
At the First Restart the following configuration changes are made.

The required VxDs from the winit.ini file are combined to form the vmm32.vxd file.
- System.dat. is renamed system.da0 and system.new is renamed to system.dat.
- A registry flag indicates to windows that this is the first start following a new installation.
If required the installation log files may be reviewed for troubleshooting purposes.
